Forest of the Future: Wildlife habitat and sanctuary of biodiversity.
Dr Abe V Rotor
Soil and Water Conservation
Field boundaries of trees serve as wind barrier and dust filter,
important in reducing wind erosion that thins the topsoil;
the topsoil the most fertile layer of levees, fields and pastures,
rich in humus and elements that make the soil easy to toil.

Erosion and Siltation Control
Hedges along contours of hillsides appear like terraces,
akin to famous Banaue and Macho Picchio landscapes;
reverse irrigation from as the low lying cloud condenses,
flows to nourish the fields, slows down at the hedges,
tames runoff that peels the field and etches its edges;
geometry in beauty and function for poets and sages.

Wildlife in the City
Hedges in human settlements make a contiguous green row,
arboretum on the park, miniature version of forest view,
firebreaks and windbreaks, they cool the air of the place too;
birds nest on treetops, wildlife in their bough and shadow.

Aesthetic Function and Beauty
Green octopus with lesser arms though,
hedges along streams converging
into a basin, each fashioned like a bough,
reminiscent of little Afton flowing.

Prototype Forest Profile
Time, season after season, generations to come,
the hedges grow and expand
into layers, each a niche and domain of species,
to form a true forest stand.
