The ethnobotany of maguey traces its origin, its beginnings as an industry in the Ilocos region and its importance as an indigenous substitute for imported synthetic fibers. The possibilities of restoring the maguey's importance as an income generating crop are obvious. The maguey farmer presently must depend on other means of livelihood but the terrain and the agro-climatic conditions are right for the plant and its commercial prospects.
