"Kamayan" - the Natural Way to Eat

Kamayan - the Natural Way to Eat
Dr Abe V Rotor
Eat without chinaware on a weekend with the whole family;
go for charcoal broiled hito, dalag and tilapia and talaba,
fresh seaweeds pukpuklo and arusip, meat and poultry
kilawin, pinakbet with bagnet, dinakdakan, padaw, rasa.
we're rich in these and a wide range of indigenous culinary
art graced with the native ambiance and history of the place.
   Food is served  on a  long table lined with wax paper (ideally banana leaves)
Food is shared and passed on liberally.

 Can you identify these recipes?

Why don't you have your own kamayan together in your home on a weekend?  Plan out with the kids, with lolo and lola,  List down your favorite recipes and get a consensus.  Plan out as a group, anticipate the agreed date.  Have a simple barbecue stand, or just three stones for a stove for cooking and broiling in your backyard.  Use banana leaves, avoid plastic or aluminum foil. Cook with firewood and charcoal.  If feasible, cook in clay pots instead of aluminum pans.

By the way strictly omit MSG (vetsin and other brand names) and heavy seasoning. Avoid food with high cholesterol, fatty and salty and too sweet food, as well as others that are bad to health. Avoid preserved food, go for fresh ones.  Have an ample supply of vegetables and fruits. Don't just indulge in eating and drinking. Be a modest epicurean if you do. And no food waste, please.

Remember its a family affair.  Every one should be involved, and must enjoy.

Put in writing, video or still photo presentation, as you experience this occasion, and share it in your school and community. ~
